Buying gunmetal: RG5, RG7 and gunmetal chips

Gunmetal is copper with around five percent tin and a little zinc, almost always in sand casting: pump housings, valves, valves, bearing bushings. It looks similar to brass and tin bronze for confusion, so it is worth looking at color, surface and chip shape. Both grades are accompanied by Brass & gunmetal.

• Gunmetal scrap pieces – Pump housing, impellers, valves, sliders.
• Sliding bearings, bushings and worm gears of cast red, if without steel support shell.
• Casting residues from the foundry: sprues, Steiger, miscast parts, casting flash, Tiegelreste.
• Water meter housings, shut-off fittings, boat fittings and ship screws made of cast red.
• Gunmetal turnings – dry rotary and drilling chips, free of iron and foreign chips.

We don't buy this

• Brass and chromed sanitary fittings: yellow base tone, smooth turned surface – which run under the brass grades.
• Armatures with bolted-in steel pipe or iron flange: as long as the iron stays on it, it is Mixed scrap.
• Aluminium cast, which is reshaped gunmetal: matt grey, without red tone, strikingly light – see Aluminium.
• Grey cast iron with bronze lacquer: the magnet adheres, that is iron scrap.
• Wet shavings and grinding sludge with cooling lubricant: The issue of waste management.
• Parts with attached solder or lead wool in the thread: remove the solder beforehand, see Selling tin.

Gunmetaling: the characteristics

Gunmetal is not magnetic; the magnet adheres, it is grey cast iron or painted steel. Under greenish-brown patina, a filing point shows a reddish-brown, salmon-colored base tone – brass is clearly yellower, bright copper clearly red. The surface is sand casting skin: grainy and rough, with form seams and uneven wall thicknesses. Gunmetal breaks brittle and gives short, crumbly chips, brass long and tough.

Gunmetaling, brass, bronze

Brass is copper with zinc, yellow and well machined, typical as pipe, rod and fitting. Gunmetaling is copper with tin and little zinc, in sand casting, typical as pump, fitting and bearing. Tin bronze has more tin, is harder and looks brownish-grey instead of reddish; it is stuck in snail wheels and sliding bearings.

How the sale is done in four steps

1. Keep pieces and chips separate, remove foreign parts, then specify grade and quantity by Request a quote.
2. Choose your way: send in Germany by DHL, chips in dense buckets or double sacks, have them picked up or bring by yourself, see Delivery.
3. Weighing at Ludwigshafen am Rhein on calibrated scales, classification according to the actual grade; the weighing slip is yours.
4. Payment within 24 hours of receipt of the weighing slip, for businesses by credit in accordance with § 14 para. 2 VATG.

Minimum quantity, shipping costs, payout

There is no minimum quantity. Package shipping up to 1,000 kg, per package maximum 31.5 kg, 6 euros per package, charged with the payment; the shipping label comes from us by e-mail. Collection from 500 kg throughout Germany, the collection costs are staggered by distance, lie between 40 and 350 Euro and are fixed before the journey. Machiners from the Rhine-Neckar region deliver themselves: Industriestraße 4, 67063 Ludwigshafen am Rhein, Mo until Sat 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., without appointment – follow further delivery points.
