Why the gunmetal price moves
Gunmetal is not a type of brass, but a tin bronze: copper with tin and a smaller zinc content, cast for dense parts. No stock exchange is listed in gunmetal. The price follows the quotations of copper and tin in the ratio of alloy – the copper content indicates the basic level, the tin content increases, the zinc content pulls it slightly downwards. Both are listed on the stock exchange every day; the stand above is followed up every working day.
Why the purchase price is below the quotation
Between a box of fittings and the quotation there is work: sort, seal and steel screws separate, weigh, transport to the foundry, burn when melting. In addition, there are reductions for contamination – oil on chips, lime in housings – and the proportion that weighs along without being alloy. Larger quantities of a grade distribute the effort over more kilos, hence the quantity stages.
What distinguishes the gunmetal price per grade
Gunmetal scrap pieces are whole or broken casting parts: fittings, water meters, pump and valve housings, sanitary fittings, artificial casting. Gunmetal turnings are turning and drilling chips from machining; they are carried separately because they carry oil and often contain iron chips of the same machine.
This is how you distinguish cast red from brass: both are not magnetic and do not rust, the magnet only separates steel. The color decides – gunmetal is golden yellow with reddish stitch, brass looks brighter and pure yellow. Because both start and fittings are often chromed, do not check the surface, but a fresh spot: with the file, draw an edge. The second feature is the shape: gunmetal is cast, has cast seams, casting remains and a grainy surface; brass is drawn or turned – smooth pipes, profiles, Brass cartridge cases.

What you can do for a good price
Keep pieces and chips separate and do not put gunmetal into brass – mixed is rated according to the weaker portion. Steel screws and seals belong out; chips drain off and seven iron chips.

Gunmetal Price per kg: RG5 and RG7
Gunmetaling is a copper-tin-zinc alloy, and the designations RG5 and RG7 refer to the tin content. More tin means higher kilo price. Pieces and chips are billed separately because chips bring drilling oil and fine portion. The table above shows both grades with the price of the day.
Gunmetal or brass? The Difference in Break
The confusion costs money to your credit: gunmetal is above brass. File in a hidden place. If the fresh area is reddish, it is reddish cast; yellow to pale yellow speaks for brass. Threads and sealing surfaces made of fittings are often gunmetal, even if the component is nickel-plated outside.
Questions about gunmetal
Why is gunmetal above brass?
At the alloy: Gunmetal like Rg5 (CuSn5Zn5Pb5) contains around 85 percent copper and about five percent tin. Brass comes out with 58 to 63 percent copper, the rest is the cheaper zinc. Tin is the most expensive of the metals involved in the London Metal Exchange — copper and tin are driving the red-cast price together. That's why separating from brass is worth it.
How do I distinguish cast red from brass?
At the color of a fresh wedge or interface: gunmetal looks reddish to salmon, brass yellow. At the shape: Gunmetal is cast material — valve body, pump housing, water meter, often with rough casting skin and cast seam, while brass is usually pressed, turned or available as sheet metal. Gunmetal sounds duller, and the fracture surface is grainy instead of tough.
Which parts on gunmetal fittings press the price?
Everything that weighs, without being non-ferrous metal: spindles and springs made of steel, stainless steel sieves, ceramic cartridges, plastic handles, rubber seals, glass and counters in water meters, with residual water in closed housings. Chrome-plated surfaces are uncritical, the layer is thin. Pliers and pipe keys get out most of it in a few minutes.
Is it worth a few gunmetal parts, or should I collect?
Both go. Gunmetal is dense: a bucket of valves and fittings weighs more than it looks, and is usually above the minimum payment of 25 euros. From the Rhine-Neckar area you can get small quantities without appointment in Ludwigshafen In the case of the For shipping it is worth collecting: Each package costs 6 euros, and from the scale limit we pay more.
Do you buy bronze like plain bearings or ship screws as gunmetal?
Tin bronze and gunmetal are closely related, both are copper-tin alloys; in our list is the type gunmetal, there you enter bronze parts when selling. The important thing is the separation of composite parts: plain bearing shells with steel back and bushings, which are still sitting in the steel housing, are not pure non-ferrous metal. It is calculated according to the actual grade.
